China bank investors play "hunt the deposits"
BEIJING, Aug 24 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Banks' lending is limited by their loan to deposit ratios. So they have hit on a clever trick: shift deposits on and off the balance sheet at strategic times. The window-dressing is a worrying sign that regulators are not able to keep the world's biggest banks in check.
